NCLEX Registration and Scheduling: A Candidate Checklist

Understand the general NCLEX registration steps, what to verify with your nursing regulator, and what to check before scheduling an exam.

NCLEX registration involves more than one organization, so it can be hard to tell which step comes next. Your nursing regulatory body (NRB) determines your eligibility and requirements; Pearson VUE handles exam registration and scheduling.

The details depend on where you are applying for licensure. Use this checklist to organize the general process, then confirm every requirement with the regulator where you intend to practice.

1. Identify your nursing regulator

Start with the NRB for the jurisdiction where you are seeking licensure. Review its application instructions, education requirements, fees, deadlines, and any additional steps that apply to you.

The official NCLEX registration page directs candidates to contact the relevant NRB for licensure and registration requirements. Do not assume that a classmate's process—or a checklist written for another state or country—also applies to you.

2. Complete the regulator's application steps

Submit the application and supporting information requested by your regulator. Keep copies of confirmations and note any outstanding items. The regulator, not a tutoring company or question bank, determines when you meet its requirements.

If you are unsure whether a transcript, identity document, background check, or other item has been received, contact the regulator directly using its official contact information.

3. Register for the exam with Pearson VUE

Follow the current NCLEX registration instructions and Pearson VUE directions. Registration with Pearson VUE and approval from your regulator are separate steps; completing one does not automatically mean the other is finished.

Use your legal and identifying information carefully. Before exam day, confirm that your registration details meet the current identification requirements in the NCLEX Candidate Bulletin.

4. Watch for your Authorization to Test

After the required steps are complete, watch the email account associated with your registration for updates and your Authorization to Test (ATT). Check your spam folder and keep your contact information current.

Your ATT includes an authorization period. The length and applicable rules can vary, so read the dates on your own ATT rather than relying on a general timeline from someone else's experience.

5. Schedule within your authorization period

Once authorized, use the official scheduling process to select an appointment. Available locations and dates can change. Before confirming, check that the appointment works with your travel plans, accessibility needs, and remaining authorization time.

Read the current bulletin for rescheduling, cancellation, and missed-appointment rules before making changes. If your ATT is close to expiring, contact your regulator or Pearson VUE through the official channels listed in your instructions.

Keep a simple tracking list

Record the steps that apply to you:

  • Identify the regulator where you are seeking licensure.
  • Review its current requirements and submit the requested materials.
  • Complete the required exam registration steps.
  • Receive and check your ATT dates.
  • Schedule an appointment that fits the authorization period.
  • Review current identification and test-center rules.

This checklist is a planning aid, not an official application or a guarantee of eligibility. Requirements, fees, and policies can change. Confirm current details with your regulator, Pearson VUE, and the official NCLEX registration page.

Once your appointment is set, use a study schedule that matches your available time and practice needs. The flexible weekly NCLEX study plan can help you choose realistic study blocks.
